Review

This Russian film is in many ways unique. He was removed after the revolution, in the private cinema partnership Joseph Yermolyeva but widely demonstrated in the Soviet box office, and in 1928, the centenary of Leo Tolstoy, reissued and not much later taken out of the cinematic treatment, even then was shown on television. At the same time was taken out in 1920 by Yakov Protazanov abroad and members of his crew, went to France, became known and well received in Europe.

Being a creative result of all of the pre-revolutionary Russian cinema, this tape can undoubtedly be included in the context of world cinema as a rare example of an early breakthrough to the depth of understanding of human psychology on the screen. If we evaluate the product Protazanov (which, of course, would not take place without accurate and surprisingly stingy foreign manner of playing Ivan Mozzhukhina) from the point of view of anticipation in film aesthetics, "interior monologue" and the attempt to transfer the on-screen line of thought and experiences of the hero, the closest analogues would appear, movies Scandinavian School (Victor Sjöström, Maurice Stiller) and a number of German films (such as "The Last Man" Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau).

High artistic value "Father Sergius" is further enhanced when compared with the previous Russian cinema experience and the subsequent phase of the Soviet cinema 20s, when even recognized masterpieces undoubtedly inferior film Yakov Protazanov just in the complexity and volume of the hero, a realistic completeness and credibility of his behavior on the screen. Perhaps only some of the bands of the decade, has emerged at the turn of the New Economic Policy (such as: "A man from the restaurant" and the "White Eagle" of the same Protazanov "The Living Corpse" by Fyodor cordoned off again on Tolstoy), can be compared with "Pater Sergius"on the ambiguity of human images and psychological nuances of behavior.

Moreover, in contrast to the next, to some extent, in the wake of his "Polikushka" (again adaptation of the novel "Father Leo", was filmed in 1919, but released on the Soviet screen only in 1922), the work of James Protazanov not stay in one only play a leading performer. And Ivan Mozzhukhin as an experienced actor, will still be stronger than his debut on screen in the role Polikushka outstanding theatrical master Ivan Moskvin. "Pater Sergius" is a solid, verified in style, memorable cinematic works in which talent Mozzhukhina - as one of the polished faces of this "true film diamonds".

  1. "Pater Sergius" - a silent film directed by Yakov Protazanov. The plot of the films based on the eponymous work of Leo Tolstoy, and tells the story of the tragic fate of the young Prince Stepan Dmitrievich Kasatsky.

We are given a great chance for seventy minutes follow a chain of changes in the inner world of man for many years. Ivan Mozzhukhin starkly demonstrates how the Prince Stepan, while still young, yearning to stand out, speak louder than others, and even kiss the hand of the king that accurately conveys teenage maximalism inherent in time for each of us.

Growing up and finding the beauty of young men Kasatsky leaves his intentions become known in secular circles and has made some decisions that to him in the future become a fatal ... his selfish desire to marry Mary Korotkova from a noble family develops into a fondness for its subtle nature and then in a strong mutual affection. But Mary has a secret, and when she opens her Stepan candid truth about corrupt ties with the monarch, he could no longer trust her, and then Ivan Mozzhukhin before us frustrated, angry and confused at the same time - the actor pours out to the audience a colorful palette of emotions and feelings why look at the dialogue in love with the garden when it is repeated in the memories of Stephen, not boring, and the scene does not seem intrusive.

At the moment of betrayal people feel particularly helpless, lost and he looks at the world as if in a dream. Kasatsky after much anguish realizes that something has to change radically in the usual course of his life to avoid painful thoughts and feelings about past love. The scene where the prince are priests symbolically represents a turning point in the heart of Stepan, to give up their identity in a past life and start from scratch, which he does not intend to tarnish more errors. His lowered head shows the same shiver of fear in and before, and you can handle it, and the courage that drives them in this difficult moment.

Before us reveals the world of another person - Pater Sergius, who despite a long stay in the monastery can not let go of the memories of a past life where it will always be my first love - Mary. For a moment his heart settled regret their choice, but Pater Sergius struggling with itself. And this internal struggle, which led the increasingly need in the privacy of a closed conversation with himself, and accompanies the story on ...

On the way the hero faces temptation, and, despite the fact that Pater Sergius stoically withstand the onslaught of "worldly", his eyes unreadable no pride in their spiritual growth, and the overwhelming indifference and fatigue. And yet one day Pater Sergius can not resist the temptation to another. Now that his heart again settled sin, and in the mind - regret for momentary impulse, Pater Sergius runs ... runs away from the monastery, but not from himself.

Pather Sergius is no more ... But Stepan Kasatsky no longer return. Once burning flame of youth, and later a brave fighter for his spiritual development, unknown vagabond forced shadow is in the wrong window. And not finding shelter in someone's heart and blood, once the prince Kasatsky yet never be able to eject the memory of lived minutes away from the mind and soul. And let it never came to that moment when a person realizes who he is and why he had come to this land, Stepan transformed from a reckless and frivolous youngster to ponder and a deep sense of identity.

Motion picture "Pater Sergius" through images and metaphors of expression, a bit exaggerated and overly theatrical shows us a man's life, and his eternal constant struggle with his own "I", incessant quest itself, the search for answers to the rhetorical questions, the need to limit the material, to a deeper spiritual experience - exactly what occurs with each person and what tells Leo Tolstoy, and later Jacob Protozanov ...

  2. The film shows how relative everything is valued in the world of ordinary people (money, social status, love of beautiful women, seduction, the respect, fame).

Experiencing a crisis of faith Kasatsky says: "Pater Sergius is no more, not at all". But rejected by society, and are numbered among the beggars, he still remains true to himself to the end.
