  1. In 1917-1918, after the February Revolution, many of the topics previously taboo, have been actively used in the film. Yakov Protazanov put two films that would have been banned, "Father Sergius" and "Satan is jubilant".

The film tells about the priest, preaches asceticism, faced with Satan, who tempts him, forcing his wife to have sex with his brother. Because of the erotic component of the film was banned in Sweden.

The image of the priest masterfully create a brilliant Russian actor Ivan Mozzhukhin previously played the character ("Christmas Eve"), Vladimir ("Chrysanthemums"), German ("Queen of Spades"), Father Sergius ("Father Sergius") and even himself ("backstage screen"). role played by his mistress known actress Natalia Lysenko, who had previously played with Mozzhukhin in "The Beggar", "Backstage screen", "The Hercules of the spirit", etc.

Himself, the film is little different from the others, shot in Russia: the gloomy atmosphere, excessive theatricality game actors 'bad' end and, of course, sharp social problems.
